In the United Arab Emirates, representatives of different faiths and nationalities often join in the spirit of tolerance and interfaith coexistence. Ramadan, a holy month of fasting for Muslims, provides meaningful opportunities for interreligious dialogue.
In March 2024, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Abu Dhabi joined hands with other volunteers of different faiths in passing out iftar boxes for Muslims who were about to break their fast. The iftar boxes, consisting of a bottle of water, dates and a little fig cake, were distributed to drivers who were on their way to their homes to break their fast. Tens of thousands of such boxes were distributed nationwide by volunteers, places of worship, charities and authorities.
One volunteer reflected on the experience: “Working alongside Muslims, Christians and other faith representatives on this project has been great and meaningful. I think it’s a modest act of kindness and support to those fulfilling their religious duties and observations. I hope that by allowing these people to break their fast on their way home, we can help them feel cared for and supported. It’s also an effort to encourage safer driving by alleviating the rush!”

In Dubai, an annual interfaith iftar dinner was hosted by the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara on March 21, 2024, bringing together people from diverse religious backgrounds, representatives of the Dubai government and other community members.
Dr. Surender Singh Kandhari, the gurudwara chairman, said, “Ramadan is a time of reflection, devotion and compassion. It’s a month where unity and empathy prevail, transcending boundaries of faith and culture. This time holds special significance for our Muslim brothers and sisters. It’s a time of spiritual renewal, self-discipline and gratitude. It’s a time when everyone comes together to share blessings and reaffirm the bonds of the future.”
Representatives of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints expressed gratitude for participating in such events. Sybil Ostler, special administrative representative of the Church, shared her thoughts: “What a joy it is to be surrounded by representatives of diverse cultures and faith expressions. Sharing this moment with our Muslim friends, during a season so dear to them, alongside fellow members of various faith communities, is a privilege. We can celebrate one another’s traditions together — in peace, love and harmony.”
